Goose Island was formed when the North Branch Canal was dug to bypass a bend in the north branch of the Chicago River. Migrating geese often made a temporary home there. The island soon became home to industry - brick making factories sprung up to turn the clay dug from the canal into building material for the rapidly expanding city.
